I Drove My Friend’s Mom Home… Then She Leaned In, “Take Me Somewhere Quiet.” I Never Regretted It
I turned toward her.
“What?”
“He didn’t leave
the house.”
Her voice shook.
“He left the marriage.”
I had known Michael Mercer for years. He was reserved, successful, polished. I had always assumed he and Karen were one of those couples who had figured adulthood out while the rest of us were still improvising.
Apparently, I had been wrong.
“What happened?”
Karen laughed bitterly.
“He told me he hasn’t loved me for years.”
I felt anger before I had any right to.
“He said that?”
“Twenty-two years, Alex.”
She stared down at her hands.
“Twenty-two years of birthdays, mortgages, school concerts, Christmas cards, vacations, surgeries, funerals, arguments about paint colors and whose turn it was to buy milk.”
She swallowed.
“And he sat across from me this morning drinking coffee and told me the last eight of those years had been an act.”
I didn’t know what to say.Anything
I came up with sounded useless.
So I
just listened.
Karen drew in a shaky breath.
“He said he stayed because Daniel was still at home. Then because his mother got sick. Then because selling the house would be complicated.”
Track Pregnancy
“That’s cold.”
“No.”
She gave me a strange smile.
“The cold part came later.”
I waited.
“There’s someone else.”
My jaw tightened.
“How long?”
“He says six months.”
“You believe him?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
That told me everything.
Karen wiped beneath one eye.
“I found hotel charges from two years ago.”
“Jesus.”
“He said they were business trips.”
“And they weren’t.”
“I don’t know yet.”
Her voice broke on the last word.
Then she looked at me.
“That’s the worst part. I don’t know anything anymore.”
I stared through the rain-covered windshield.
I wanted to tell her Michael was an idiot.I wanted to tell her
she deserved better.
