After Four Years of Marriage, I Learned I Couldn’t Have Children. My Mother-in-Law Called Me “BARREN” and Demanded My Husband…
“Your infertility.”
My heart began pounding.
“What are you talking about?”
She leaned closer.
“You’re not the one who can’t have children. Daniel is.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
Then I stepped backward.
“That’s impossible. My doctor told me—”
“Your doctor didn’t tell you the whole truth,” Jessica interrupted.
Patricia suddenly jumped to her feet.
“JESSICA! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?”
But Jessica didn’t stop.
“I’m a registered nurse, Emily. My mother told me Patricia wanted me to marry Daniel. But when Patricia started talking about his medical history, something didn’t make sense.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Tell her everything, Jessica.”
I stared at my husband.
“You knew?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Only since Tuesday.”
Jessica continued.
“When Daniel was nineteen, he underwent treatment for a serious medical condition. Afterward, doctors warned Patricia that his fertility might have been permanently affected.”
My knees weakened.
“Daniel, is that true?”
He nodded.
“I barely remember the details. Mom always told me I had recovered completely.”
Patricia began shaking her head.
“IT WAS YEARS AGO! THE DOCTORS WERE WRONG!”
Jessica opened her handbag.
“I helped Daniel obtain his old medical records after he authorized their release. He also underwent new fertility testing this week.”
She placed the results on the table.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, my test showed that I have no sperm in my semen. The specialist says I may never be able to father a child naturally.”
I covered my mouth.
For four years, I had blamed myself.
But why had my doctor told me I was infertile?
Jessica looked at Patricia.
“Tell Emily what you did.”
Patricia’s face turned pale.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Daniel suddenly raised his voice.
“MOM! TELL HER!”
The room fell silent.
Finally, Patricia sank into her chair.
“I only wanted to protect you,” she whispered.
“Protect me from WHAT?” Daniel demanded.
“From knowing you couldn’t give me grandchildren!”
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“I knew about your condition. When Emily struggled to get pregnant, I convinced her to visit Dr. Reynolds.”
My eyes widened.
Dr. Reynolds was Patricia’s longtime friend.
Patricia continued, her voice trembling.
“I told him about your medical history. I asked him not to mention the possibility that you were infertile.”
I stared at her in horror.
“You convinced my doctor to lie to me?”
“He said your results were inconclusive!” Patricia cried. “I only wanted him to encourage you to accept that you might never have children!”
