My 10-Year-Old Daughter Brought Her Classmate Home Because He Was Hungry—But The Moment My Husband Saw The Boy’s Face, He…
I welcomed him in without thinking twice. Before the night was over, I realized the real mystery wasn’t why he had come. It was why he looked so familiar.
It was dark, and Emma’s club had ended forty minutes earlier. She wasn’t answering her phone. I was grabbing my keys to go look for her when the front door swung open.
“Where have you been? I was so worried…”
I stopped. A boy about her age stood behind her.
“Mom, this is Noah,” Emma said. “He hasn’t eaten. We have English class together, and I’ve been giving him part of my lunch all week. Today he asked if I had anything else.”
“All week? Emma, why didn’t you tell me?”
“You always say we shouldn’t leave people when they need help. And Noah needed help.”
The boy edged back toward the door. “Sorry, ma’am. I can go.”
“No, honey, come in. But your family must be worried. Where do you live?”
He stared at his hands. “My mom died. I live with my aunt. My dad hardly ever sees me. He says I’m her problem.”
I didn’t ask another question. I went to the kitchen.
I served soup, mac and cheese, and homemade cake. Noah finished his soup before Emma took three bites. When I asked if he wanted more, he hesitated. “Is there enough?”
The question caught me off guard. “There’s plenty.”
“Can I have some for later?”
Emma looked at me. “Of course,” I said. “We’ll pack some up.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
He lowered his eyes. “Aunt Claire says that too.”
Something in the way he said it made me stop asking questions.
When my husband, Mark, got home, I pulled him into the kitchen and told him everything. We walked into the living room together, where Noah was building little toy tracks across the carpet. He glanced up.
Mark stopped dead. He gripped the doorframe, staring at the boy. “No. That’s impossible.”
“What is?”
He blinked and finally looked at me. “Nothing.”
“That wasn’t nothing.”
Mark forced a smile and sent the kids upstairs to look at Emma’s science project. Once they were gone, I grabbed his wrist. “What was that?”
