My 10-Year-Old Daughter Brought Her Classmate Home Because He Was Hungry—But The Moment My Husband Saw The Boy’s Face, He…
I held up the photo. “Does he look like Dad to you?”
She didn’t answer.
“Look at him.”
“I did.” Her voice broke. “That’s what frightens me.”
For the first time, I realized she might genuinely not know. I turned to leave, and she said, “Wait.” She disappeared down the hallway and came back with an envelope. My name was written across the front in my father’s handwriting.
“Something I promised myself I would never give you.”
“Why?”
“Because your father is dead. Linda is dead. I thought Grace was gone from our lives too.”
“She is dead.”
Her hand shook as she passed it over. “I found it after the funeral three years ago. I thought knowing would only hurt you.”
“You didn’t get to decide that.”
I tore it open.
Sophie, there is something about my life I should have told you years ago. When you were little, I betrayed your mother with a woman named Linda. There is no excuse for it. What I did not know then was that Linda became pregnant. Years later, she contacted me and told me the child was mine. Her name was Grace.
I stopped breathing. Grace was my sister. Noah’s mother.
I asked for proof because I was afraid to believe her. The test confirmed it. Grace was my daughter. She was only a few years older than you. I met her in secret because I was ashamed, and terrified that telling the truth would cost me the family I already had.
“Oh, God,” Mom whispered. “You really didn’t know.”
“He never told me.”
“I knew he was seeing someone connected to Linda. Sometimes I thought the affair had started again.”
“He was meeting his daughter.”
I kept reading.
Grace knew about you. She asked about you constantly. She wanted to meet you. I kept telling her I needed more time. Time became years. Eventually, she stopped asking.
“He let her think he was ashamed of her.”
“Maybe he was.”
“No. He was ashamed of himself.”
One final paragraph.
If I don’t get the chance to fix this myself, please find her. None of this was her fault, and none of it was yours. She deserved a sister. You deserved the truth.
