My 7-year-old son came home in tears, asking me to be careful with his arm
“I tried calling an ambulance, but Principal Coleman wouldn’t allow it.”
She handed me a small flash drive.
Then she showed me a photograph.
Captain Reynolds was entering the school’s maintenance office approximately thirty minutes after Ethan’s injury.
Mr. Harris stood beside him.
And Harris was holding Michael’s black leather key tag.
I could barely speak.
“Why would Reynolds want my husband’s key?”
Claire hesitated.
“Because Michael was investigating the captain before he passed away.”
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the living room.
The glass panel beside our front entrance had shattered.
Reynolds had forced his way toward the door.
“Emily!” he shouted. “You’re interfering with a police investigation!”
Claire reached for Ethan’s hand.
“We need to get somewhere safe.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Reynolds called out, “Those are my officers!”
But another vehicle arrived behind his cruiser.
A dark SUV stopped near the driveway.
Two investigators wearing state police jackets stepped out.
Reynolds immediately fell silent.
One approached our porch.
“Mrs. Carter, I’m Special Agent Laura Bennett. We received a report concerning your son.”
Claire visibly relaxed.
Then Laura said something neither of us expected.
“We’ve also been investigating Captain Reynolds regarding the circumstances surrounding your husband’s death.”
Reynolds slowly stepped backward.
For the first time that evening, his confidence disappeared.
“Captain Reynolds, please step away from your vehicle.”
Special Agent Laura Bennett spoke firmly.
Reynolds raised his hands.
Laura gestured toward the damaged entrance.
“Then perhaps you can explain what happened to this window.”
Reynolds appeared unable to answer.
Two investigators escorted him away from our porch while paramedics entered the house.
I carefully helped Ethan into the living room.
“Please watch his right arm,” I told them.
At the hospital, X-rays confirmed fractures involving both bones of his forearm.
Dr. Elena Ruiz explained that Ethan needed proper stabilization and an orthopedic evaluation.
When she asked about the circumstances, I showed her the thre:atening note.
Her expression became serious.
“We need to document everything carefully.”
A hospital social worker photographed the makeshift bandages before the medical team removed them.
After receiving treatment, Ethan finally fell asleep.
I remained beside him, gently holding his uninjured hand.
