My 10-Year-Old Daughter Brought Her Classmate Home Because He Was Hungry—But The Moment My Husband Saw The Boy’s Face, He…
I went very still. “My father’s name was Robert.”
Claire stared at me. “Who was he to Grace?”
“I was hoping you could tell me.”
“I asked, sometimes. She always changed the subject. The letters are in boxes somewhere. After she died, I had three kids to feed and a funeral to pay for.”
“Three?”
“Two of mine, and Noah. His father remembers he has a son when he’s sober. I’ve been stretching groceries until payday, and his money was supposed to come last week.”
I looked toward the stairs. Claire picked up Noah’s coat. “If Robert was your father, ask someone who knew him back then.”
“My mother.”
“Whatever Grace knew, she never told me enough to make sense of it.”
Mark tried to stop me at the door. “She barely knew anything, Sophie.”
“She knew Dad’s name.”
“I’ll drive.”
“No. Stay with Emma.” I picked up Noah’s photograph. “I’m going to ask my mother why a dead woman I never met knew my father.”
My mom opened the door in her pajamas. “Honey? What happened?”
I set the photo on her table. “Do you know this boy?”
She picked it up, and her face changed. The photograph slipped from her fingers.
“His name is Noah. His mother was Grace.”
Mom stared at the table. “I knew of her. Through your father.”
“What does that mean?”
“Sophie, some things should stay in the past.”
“Not when the past just walked into my house hungry.”
She closed her eyes. “There was a woman named Linda. Grace’s mother. Your father had an affair with her. You were three. It lasted a few months, maybe longer.”
For a second, I forgot all about Noah. “And you stayed?”
“I loved him. He swore it was over. But years later, Linda came back. She wanted something from him. There were calls, meetings, arguments. Robert said he was handling it. Once, Linda told me Grace was the reason she needed to speak to him.”
“Was Grace his daughter?”
“I don’t know. I asked. Your father told me not to worry about it, and eventually I stopped asking. Because every answer threatened to destroy the life I had.“
